A Summer of Remodeling: June 12-18

Completed Projects Update: Week 3

David's family was in town last Thursday thru this Tuesday to help with projects.

David and his sister, Anna, and mom, Leslie

* re-texture all of the ceilings (from popcorn to a flat finish)
Done!

* remove all linoleum (kitchen and bathrooms)
Done!

* update kitchen & breakfast nook

FLOORS
Sunday/Monday: mostly finished setting kitchen tile in place; areas under stove and refrigerator will be completed later this week

Buying a house is a new adventure for us but fixing up the house is equally an adventure. I've teased David that I have known he is skilled with construction and remodeling based on hearing stories of his past projects, watching him help friends with projects, and knowing he works in the construction industry. But now I KNOW he really is great! He has been so diligent and hard working on this project.

Long before David and I met I'd made a list of characteristics I desired in a future husband. All kidding aside, one of the characteristics was for the man to be skilled at building/construction. David is an answered prayer :)

Saturday: David and Ryan grouted the kitchen tile. It looks great with the grout and is starting to make the room come together and seem complete :)
FIXTURES

Tuesday: bronze-colored kitchen faucet arrived!

COUNTERS

Tuesday: stone fabricators came to measure for counter tops; counters should be installed in about 10 days!!!

Thursday:
I met with fabricators today to choose how they would cut the stone; I chose what parts of the slab would be used in each part of the kitchen; fun :)

CABINETS
Sunday: Leslie and Anna removed kitchen cabinet doors/drawers and knobs
Sunday: We removed old contact paper from all cabinetsMonday: Leslie sanded and treated cabinet doors with TSP (to remove any grease prior to having doors sprayed with paint)

Tuesday: we hired a man to spray the kitchen cabinets
Next to hiring someone to refinish the ceilings, hiring someone to paint the cabinets was the best decision ever! Both projects can be quite tedious and these men not only had very reasonable rates but did a great job and finished the projects quickly (ceilings: 1 week; cabinets: 1 day).

Thursday: some of David's friends came by the house after their softball game to put the cabinet doors back in place.

* remove wood paneling in entry and family room
Done!
Paneling removed, walls taped, sanded, flat-finished and primed for paint.

* freshen the house up with new fixtures (lighting)
Progress underway

* update bathrooms

MASTER BATH
Monday: David cut and Jim laid subway tile for master's shower surround
I have kept a binder of ideas for this house for years. When we bought the house I started showing D decorating ideas I had... needless to say, not all of my ideas were met with excitement. But, when I asked him about his feelings about subway tile it was the first idea we both loved and agreed on instantly. So, I think I will like this bathroom all the more knowing it was our first remodeling meeting-of-the-minds. Now, if only we could find a chandelier that we both like... ; )

Tuesday: David picked up new toilets

Wednesday: David grouted the bathroom tiles

Thursday: Our friend, Matt set the new water-closet (David's term :)) in master bath
Saturday: David hung soap dish and towel bar in shower

GUEST BATH
Sunday: tile dry laid
Monday: tile set in place

* paint walls and trim throughout house
Sunday: we went to Sherwin-Williams to peruse paint options; after a little bit of time I narrowed it down to 4 neutral tans and a gray-ish blue to sample; we purchased quarts of each

Sunday: Leslie and Anna applied sample colors to different walls throughout house to see how we liked the colors and how natural lighting affected them; my favorite tan won out in the end; quite a relief to not have to try out more paint samples :)

We choose bottom right for the family room/kitchen & bottom left for bedrooms, hallways, and guest bathroom. I'm undecided about laundry room and master bed/bath.

I choose to sample a grayish/blue paint for the dining room. David and I really liked it and decided to go with it :)

Monday: I purchased the paint for kitchen cabinets, trim, and all walls throughout house. While waiting for the paint to be mixed I looked at wallpaper samples; I am thinking about wall papering the master bath vanity area in a pattern that complements our bedding and to give the area a bit of fancy fun.

This wallpaper is very similar to the quilt we have and may be the perfect choice! My mom is great at putting up wallpaper so this would be a project she and I do together :)

Saturday: David and some of his friends started painting walls.

If you look closely you can see the new color (a bit darker than the original). David will cut in the paint later. For those of you who have chosen paint colors before, you know it can be a bit nerve wracking... I am happy to say that so far it is turning out well for us. The colors are looking good and not too light or too dark :)

Matt and Nii painting in the guest bedroom

* add a privacy fence to the west side of property
no progress yet

* clean-up landscaping in front and back yard
no progress yet

* purchase/make window treatments
Sunday: looked around Hancock Fabrics for drapery ideas

Our bedroom is currently in shades of brown, cream, and gold. I am considering adding accents of coral. I found these fabrics (above) for potential accent pillows.

This is the fabric (above) I would like to reupholster our couch in.

And I'm considering upholstering chairs for the family room with a chocolate brown fabric like this one. My hope is to find some inexpensive chairs at a garage sale or consignment shop to offset the cost of reupholstering.

Monday: ordered fabric to make the drapes in baby's room; JoAnn's Fabrics is running a 50% off fabric sale this weekend!!!

* shopping adventures
Tuesday: our kitchen cabinets painter needed lacquer thinner at the last minute for the cabinets. And told me about it 20 minutes before the stone fabricator's appointment to measure cabinets. So, I jumped in the car and headed towards the Home Depot near our new house (an area I am not yet familiar with, and keep in mind I am directionally challenged). Anyhow, I got a little lost... it was a bit of an adventure buying something by myself at Home Depot-- usually I follow David around, or I am there looking at pretty things like light fixtures, paint, doors. In the end, I successfully purchased the right thing for the job and made it back to the house in time to meet for the counter tops.

Wednesday: We made a trip to Lowes to buy grout for kitchen/bathroom floors and paint supplies for this weekend's paint party :)
I feel like I have perused hundreds of light fixtures for both inside and outside the house... soon I will have to make up my mind :)
