Garage Phase 2: Workstation

We have been fortunate to get some beautiful weather in Austin for a few weeks now.  With the help of a week's worth of nap times and cool weather, this project found its way to the top of my to do list!

I'm not sure how long all the phases will take to finish.  In reality, it will probably morph into a lifetime project.  But for the foreseeable future our plan is:
Phase 1- organize right half of garage; add flooring to attic for more space
Phase 2: find furniture and set-up workstation/file-room
Phase 3: further organize workstation based on usability; add bulletin boards and decor
Phase 4 - organize left half of garage: David's work bench
Phase 5 - update laundry room space; add gallery wall for G's art and a height board
Phase 6 - expand workstation with storage for crafts/gift wrapping
Phase 7 - paint the garage walls white, add a ceiling fan, add lighting

The workstation will be a combination office and craft room space.  Well, really, a more accurate title would be 'fileroom' since I don't plan to work much in the space.  But will use it to file away things instead of having them clutter up the guestbedroom or kitchen table!

My plan is to have a u-shaped work space that stores things like items to donate, returns to make, packages to take to the post office, gifts bought ahead of time, recipe boxes, binders for house plans, toys that need new batteries...  To sum it up, the workstation will house things in an organized way, but out of the shuffle of everyday life in the kitchen. In my dream house I would have a kitchen with a huge "pantry" in it that was used for this same purpose.  Maybe in Phase 100 we can add walls around this space and make that dream a reality!

It took quite a bit of chatting up this idea for David to agree to it. After all, it is in our garage.  In the end I won him over and luckily it is shaping up very nicely!  I view this space as what my brain would look like if I could open it up.  I hope it helps me compartmentalize tasks and projects so that I feel less cluttered in my brain :) I am super duper excited about how this space is coming together.

Before
Since, David does not park in the garage we are using that space for storage and a workstation. The workstation will go in the area under the attic ladder.
After
It's not magazine-pretty but it makes my heart sing!  Every time we finish a project around here, I am convinced it is my most favorite thing we've done. Technically, I think the kitchen is our favorite. But this definitely ranks high too!
